Rio Tinto Marine is responsible for improving the operating and financial performance of marine assets across the Group. This ranges from providing Rio Tinto business units with logistics support at the conceptual level of projects through to improving the productivity at the ship shore interface of existing operations. The focus is to improve overall performance through the transfer of best practice throughout the Group.
Rio Tinto Marine is a supporter of the push for long term sustainability through safer ships and cleaner seas. As part of its commitment to improving the health, safety and environmental aspect of ocean transportation, it has joined with BHP Billiton to develop RightShip which is now a world leader in vetting systems for bulk shipping.
A key part of Rio Tinto Marine's business model is the exposure to and management of freight risk. All decisions are based on rigorous analysis that is focussed on adding long term value.
